The Medway Yacht Club hosted its annual Keelboat Regatta over the long weekend from the 21st to 24th July 2011. The Skipper-s Guide joined the Medway Yacht Club sailors and jumped on the club boat to take photographs and videos. The Regatta is open to Mono-hull Cruiser Racers, Dragons, Sonatas and Squibs with crews coming from near and far to enjoy this long established event. We have to say that it was very well organized and most enjoyable for participants and spectators alike. Everyone said a warm thank you to the Medway Yacht Club Commodore (Roger Bishop) and all the organizers and sponsors for such a successful Regatta weekend.

Medway Yacht Club race organizers set a variety of courses held in the Medway Estuary and out as far as the Thames. Classes enjoyed competitive racing and variable conditions which tested the skills of all concerned. The Medway Yacht Club has a good fleet of one design boats including Dragons and Hunter Sonatas but there was also a competitive fleet in the other mono-hull races. This sailing regatta attracts serious racers and recreational sailors too. We noted that this kind of sailing attracts men, women and families all striving for the same goal. Every boat found its level and the spread across the fleets provided an exciting spectacle for observers. Of course there was the compulsory evening entertainment which catered wonderfully for celebrations and commiserations!

(any excuse for a drink or two). The Medway Yacht Club also catered for those who were more inclined to ‘sample the atmosphere- by organizing a Family Fun Cruise and Treasure Hunt.

The Medway Yacht club has a commanding position along the banks of the Medway River and excellent facilities to host a regatta of this nature. The club house caters amply for large numbers with the dedicated members of staff putting on both entertainment and catering that would be hard to beat elsewhere. It is a Sailing Club that caters for a wide spectrum of people with young, older and family members all enjoying the shore side activities and taking advantage of the spacious site and all the excellent sailing facilities.

Upnor Sailing Club started the event with an all-comers evening race and BBQ on the Thursday night. The Medway Yacht club entertained crews on the Friday evening with drinks and a diner. Plenty of yarns, stories and experiences were exchanged. The weekend started in fresh conditions and the organizers were able to set two courses for most of the classes. Saturday night saw the very popular BBQ at the Medway Yacht Club with Disco and Music to follow. Prize giving followed the last race on Sunday afternoon and all round, a good time was had by one and all.

The Medway Yacht Club is a very active sailing club with a full program of sailing and social events throughout the year. The club-s cadet week is particularly popular for younger members during the summer holidays. There is a full week of sail training and recreational activities with a lot of participants staying on site.

The event is sponsored by Boatshedmedway Yacht Brokers , Wallis The Florist, Craftinsure, Pirates Cave Chandlers, Sparshatts of Kent (Mercedes-Benz commercial dealer), PSK Prout Tilbrook Chartered Surveyors, Hanse Yachts in the UK & Peel Ports.
